Click to enlargeWakefield Flood Lock on the Calder & Hebble Navigation. The building in the distance is the same building featured in the Fall Ings Lock picture. Wakefield's waterfront is being redeveloped and the area is much improved. "Waterfront Wakefield" as the development is called contains business, leisure and residential properties. The current economic downturn may have slowed things down a little, but it is already clear that the development is transforming this area of the city.

Click to enlargeWakefield Thornes Waterfront - this time it's the other bank - Thornes. Not just a large and busy industrial area of the city, it includes some residential areas and farmland by the river. Thornes stretches down to Calder Island. There is a pleasant riverside walk to Calder Island, once the industrial area is left behind. The Calder from this point going generally westwards is part of the Calder and Hebble Navigation.
