This was originally a grammar school established by Royal Charter in 1591. Queen Elizabeth I gave permission for the school to use her name, thus 'Queen Elizabeth Grammar School' (QEGS) was founded. The school moved to its present home in Northgate in 1855.

Click to enlargeThe Six Chimneys pub in Wakefield. The inset shows the original pub of this name. The original building was built in 1561 and collapsed in 1941. The modern pub, a Wetherspoon's, is housed in a plain, flat-roofed 20th century building.
