Kirkgate Station - once upon a time of some importance and looked after. Now, sadly, just shabby but still in use.

Trains are operated by Northern Rail. The Grand Central West Riding main line service also uses this station.
Click to enlargeView towards the city centre from the station entrance. The white building is a derelict pub (Wakefield Arms). I had a pint in it on my way home from the station some years ago. Not one of Wakefield's best scenes..

View of the front. Quite an imposing building in its day, but now very much neglected and decaying.

Click to enlarge A miserable place. However, now that the Prime Minister has spoken, we can expect some action. Perhaps upgraded CCTV to get a slightly less fuzzy picture of a yob or mugger, possibly some staff, who knows?
(23rd October 2009, that particular train has now left the station.)

Subway Entrance - a dreary tunnel connects the central island platforms with the station entrance.

Click to enlargeThe Scarborough Spa Express brings a welcome touch of colour and life to the poor old station. This is the return journey from Scarborough with the final destination of York.
