The Pilkington Estate purchased many properties properties in Newmillerdam. Amongst these was Rock Cottage, bought in 1872 and originally occupied by the agent of the estate. Later, it became the home of Miss Mary Pilkington, the eldest daughter of Sir William. Miss Pilkington was involved in establishing schools in Walton.
