This
part of the canal runs through what was the Walton Colliery (Sharlston
West) and is now the Walton Colliery Nature Park. This stretch extends
for about 400 metres or so between Oakenshaw Railway Viaduct and the
Wakefield to Doncaster main railway line by Woodyard Cottages.
Drain Beck (from Walton Hall) and Oakenshaw Beck (from Crofton) flow into the nature park - an area much disturbed by mining and subsequent landscaping. The water from the becks continues towards Agbrigg and the River Calder. Oakenshaw Beck flows into the River Calder alongside the remains of the canal's Lock 1.
The canal is filled in on both sides of Oakenshaw Lane and Oakenshaw Viaduct. To the west of the lane there is a stretch in water towards Agbrigg and Heath Common; to the east, the canal is in water for much of its route in the nature park. Walton Angling Club has fishing rights on the canal.
On this stretch the canal is in water for approximately the length shown in blue on th map.
