Ruins of the barbican and facing it across the inner moat, the remains of the two drum towers. These give an indication of the fine level of workmanship that went into the construction of the castle.

Photographed on a dull day from the Walton Colliery Nature Park: A virgin Cross Country train undergoing trails with the castle remains in the background. Virgin Cross Country trains have since been replaced by another operator, but the castle is still there!

Sandal Magna viewed from the motte. In the distance is the railway embankment at Oakenshaw Lane. Somewhere from that direction, came the Lancastrian forces from Pontefract Castle to defeat Richard Plantagenet in 1460.

Sandal Castle viewed from a distance of about 2.5km from the old colliery site (then a car park) on the hill above Newmillerdam. The car park is now closed to vehicles, apparently as a consequence of illegal occupation.
