Some say that Nevison made the famous epic ride from Kent
to York in less than a day. Others state that it was another highwayman,
Nicks -"Swiftnicks".
It is also claimed by some that Nicks and Nevison are the same. In the
Nevison story in the Newgate
Calendar, no mention of the epic ride is made.
However, Nicks is
credited with the ride in the Newgate Calendar, although the starting
points differ in the account given in Captain
Richard Dudley and Daniel
Defoe's story.
Nevison was certainly
real and famous, what does seem less certain is the true identity of the
man who made the journey. One thing is clear, the story that it was Dick
Turpin who made this ride is a work of fiction.
Nevison was captured
at Sandal Magna in the old Three
Houses Inn (formerly The Magpie) and executed at York. According to Captain Alexander Smith in his account of Captain Richard Dudley, his associate, Swiftnicks, retired and did well! |
